Problem: A home-based baker known by family and friends for her outstanding sweets – like cream cheese cookies, pound cake and banana bread – thought about turning her favorite hobby into a money-making venture.

Since she didn’t want the responsibility of a building or a staff, she sought alternatives and needed help getting started.

Solution: We got to work on some creative solutions that met this client’s unique needs.

For example we:

  • Designed research methods: interviews, questionnaires and focus groups

  • Conducted qualitative and quantitative marketing research to identify buying preferences, patterns and solutions

  • Formed a board of directors and also served on it

  • Hired college students to work at farmers’ markets to offer samples and then sell the baked goods, which helped grow the business

  • Found access to a large, affordable and available commercial kitchen in a local fire department, which provided more baking space and ensured compliance with regulations

  • Transitioned the business to an online bakery, which grew the business further

The business was so successful and grew so large that it attracted a buyer; ultimately, the owner sold it to a much larger bakery. She continues to remain involved in her former business by developing new recipes for the new owners.
