Problem: A home-based baker known by family and friends for her outstanding sweets – like cream cheese cookies, pound cake and banana bread – thought about turning her favorite hobby into a money-making venture.
Since she didn’t want the responsibility of a building or a staff, she sought alternatives and needed help getting started.
Solution: We got to work on some creative solutions that met this client’s unique needs.
For example we:
Designed research methods: interviews, questionnaires and focus groups
Conducted qualitative and quantitative marketing research to identify buying preferences, patterns and solutions
Formed a board of directors and also served on it
Hired college students to work at farmers’ markets to offer samples and then sell the baked goods, which helped grow the business
Found access to a large, affordable and available commercial kitchen in a local fire department, which provided more baking space and ensured compliance with regulations
Transitioned the business to an online bakery, which grew the business further
The business was so successful and grew so large that it attracted a buyer; ultimately, the owner sold it to a much larger bakery. She continues to remain involved in her former business by developing new recipes for the new owners.
